The Brief

The world is currently facing an energy crisis as traditional energy sources are becoming less and there usage was found to be harmful to our environment. Most people are now trying to shift to alternative energy sources that are renewable and more environmentally friendly.

Egypt is currently the fourth largest oil producer and the second largest natural gas producer in Africa with potential for new discoveries of oil and natural gas fields. It also has notable access to wind, biomass, and solar energy.

Nevertheless, Egypt continues to face significant challenges in the field of energy. The Egyptian population is growing rapidly resulting in a need for sizable industry growth to fulfill our ever-increasing economic needs. The existing infrastructure is in many cases old and inefficient, requiring substantial updates and maintenance. Most energy systems rely on the traditional non-renewable energy sources of oil and gas and are not working at their optimal efficiency of production or transmission.

The use of renewable energy is still quite marginal and considered to be expensive especially when compared to the highly subsidized traditional energy sources.

All the above rests on a regulatory system that has yet to effectively encourage investment in renewable energy or engage the private sector in renewable energy production.

Instructions

For this challenge, we would like to investigate the alternative energy sources that are available to the country. Next, we will imagine together what the perfect scenario would be for how the country, organizations, and individuals should use alternative sources. After setting the ideal scenario we will think together of what incentives can be created to encourage the transition to them. Make sure to consider both negative and positive incentives. Do not limit your ideas to what you might think is feasible or realistic, we are looking for creative suggestions as you would hope for it to be without any perceived constraints.

Your ideas will be evaluated by a panel of experts during the Expert Feedback Phase who will then connect them to what is currently being done, what can be done, and what should be done. Three final scenarios, based on your suggestions and the experts’ opinions will be developed describing what the future will look like if we do everything right, what will happen if we do nothing, and what will happen if something goes dramatically wrong.

“The success of renewable energy in the electricity sector in individual states differs greatly. This is more a result of policy context than natural potential. This raises a few questions. 1. What instruments do governments use? 2. What has proved to be the most efficient and effective way of support? And finally, we look at what governments really do and what that could mean for investors.”

Factors affecting consumer satisfaction are as follows: 1. Added Value or Quality of Service 2. Initial Cost 3. Running Cost 4. Maintenance and Durability Note: There is always a tradeoff between these factors Based on The Above, Two Examples for Renewable Energy Applications are Electric Cars and Solar Energy. A. Electric Cars: One case study shows that a Mercedes S Class, with an internal combustion engine, owner will pay over $100k more than someone who purchased a Tesla Model S due to base or initial price, fuel consumed for same mileage, and maintenance costs, as the study showed simple repairs due to damage don’t cost that much for Tesla Electric Car. Furthermore, less harmful carbon emissions and less noise compared to petrol vehicles reduce much of our surrounding pollution. As for the added value or performance, an example is Nissan Leaf car with a range of 151 miles and 147 Horsepower, 5 seats, and much luxury from inside. B. The main challenge with using solar panels at home is not price, as it is relatively cheap, however, it is technical related to the efficiency of solar cells which increases the area required to generate a specific amount of power. So why don’t we use solar panels along with traditional electricity at home in order to make a compromise and take advantage of both. References: [1] Ulanoff, L. We need to focus on finding more alternatives of generating more energy with a non-harmful way to our environment, as with each passing technologies are getting more advanced which needs more power, so let's focus on generating more energy! rather than wasting the opportunities of renewable energy surrounding us everywhere! or focusing on limiting the energy usage.   Check this article for the Top 10 renewable energy sources http://listverse.com/2009/05/01/top-10-renewable-energy-sources/ I know it's somehow costly, but in the long term paying electricity bills are much more pricy, and will keep getting more and more pricy.

To convince people to use alternative energy resources we should design the campaign in a way that touches their daily routine, personal life,  and everyday problems; for instance, Elevator manufacturers should begin promoting new products with generators built on solar panels. so that the elevator will not break down when traditional energies fail (which happens in the summer on a daily basis) so, people will relate between the renewable energy and their every day problems and start considering using it.

In order to push individuals to reduce their usage of energy , you must provide the equivalent quality alternatives for products like home Applications. By putting them on market with competitive prices and quality  , and by reducing taxes and Customs on traders who import that kind of products.

Create an app that tells you what appliances use more electricity. Set a regulation that AC has a minimum temp setting.

We can apply the idea of the energy-generating soccer balls from India. The government, a non-profit organization, or a company should partner with "UNCHARTED PLAY", the company who invented the concept, and bring it to kids in Egypt.
